Public Lectures/ Anniversary dinner
100 years of Einstein's General Relativity
by Dr Paul Lasky (astrophysicist) and Dr Peter Huf
(scientist/musician)
November 25, 2015, 6.00pm
Venue
Deakin University (lecture) followed by The Edge |
Did you know:
- that your GPS system would not be able to be accurate without Einstein's
general relativity (GR)
- that Einstein revolutionised our concept of energy with his famous equation
E=mc2 as well as a lot more...
- that Einstein played the violin pretty well
- and much more.....

On November 25, 2015, we celebrate 100 years of the latest great
revolution of physics: the publication of Albert Einstein's general relativity field equations
(exactly 100 years to the day of the publication of the
theory)
There will be 2 lectures, pitched at a level for a general audience.
The areas of the lectures to be covered will be
- the nature of the theory
- the types of technologies that have resulted from applications of GR eg. GPS
- new areas of research that have resulted from GR:black hole physics and astrophysics, cosmology, and gravitational waves
- Einsteins personality and approach to life and research
- reflections on the meaning of it all for us

Dr. Paul Lasky is a Research Fellow in Gravitational Wave Astrophysics
at Monash University. He is interested in everything related to gravitational
physics and Einstein's theory of relativity, and is involved in a variety of
research topics such as neutron star and black hole physics, gravitational
waves, cosmology, gravitational lensing and alternative theories of gravity. As
a member of both the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO)
Scientific Collaboration, and the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array collaboration he is
contributing to the global gravitational wave detection effort by modelling
gravitational wave sources and developing data analysis search algorithms.search algorithms.

Dr. Peter Huf has worked as a scientist and musician for almost 40 years. He is currently academic director of Deakin College (Geelong campuses), and director of the bach2roq group.
Since 2009 he has been studying for his second PhD, this with supervisor Dr John Carminati (Deakin), on general relativity, and the use of software to solve algebraic equations. He will speak briefly on personal reflections
on Einstein's impact on our lives.
